Tracy Barnes’ Altitude Record Setting Flight
Pictured is the unique styrofoam basket Tracy Barnes built in 1964. Below he is shown standing next to the exhibit in the Museum. He coupled this lightweight basket with the hydrogen filled gas balloon, also shown in the picture. On May 10, 1964 he flew this balloon to an altitude of 38,650 feet which qualified him to receive 11 world altitude records. He had a black bag filled with oxygen. If he became unconscious, the plywood bottom would open and drop him out and his parachute would open. Needless to say, he did not need to use that feature. He went on to manufacture hot air balloons in a company called “The Balloon Works”. He pioneered the parachute top and the triangular basket.
